Typhoon Fengshen Ravages the Philippines

Last June 22, 2008, Typhoon Fengshen devastated Central and Southern Luzon and a number of provinces in Visayas and Mindanao. Currently, the Department of Agriculture has estimated crop damage to be Php 3.3 billion. Of the damaged areas, crops in 19,508 hectares were totally destroyed with no chance of recovery, while those planted in another 63,186 hectares still have a chance of recovery. Damages to infrastructure, roads and bridges, have reached Php 750 million. An estimate of 3.2 million people were displaced because mainly of flashfloods. Meanwhile, the death toll has reached 622 as of today—124 of which came from the capsized ship the MV Princess. |
