Typhoon Durian (Reming) Devastates Southern Luzon

Typhoon Durian (local name: Reming), the strongest storm to hit the country this year, devastates southern Luzon, particularly the Bicol Region, with winds up to 225 kilometers (139 miles) per hour. Power, communication, and water continues to be out of service in the Bicol region as 146 steel transmission towers and 30 wooden electric posts were toppled. President Macapagal-Arroyo Based declares a "state of national calamity" as the death toll is expected to exceed 1,000. According to the Office of Civil Defense, infrastructure and agriculture damage was estimated at Php 23.2 million and Php 11 million, respectively.

Coconut plantations in Pitogo, General Luna,Mulanay, and Catanauan were heavily hit and are expected to recover within 2 years. Moderately hit plantations are expected recover in a year.
