Typhoon Durian (Reming) Continues to Threaten Luzon

As of 2:00AM today, Typhoon Durian (a possible maximum category 5 or "super typhoon") has hit Virac, Catanduanes with winds as fast as 190 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 225 kilometers per hour. It was moving west northwest at 17 kilometers per hour. This storm is projected to be stronger than the last storm that devastated Luzon last September 29, Typhoon Xangsane (Milenyo).

Public storm signal number 4 remains hoisted over Catanduanes, Albay and Camarines provinces in Bicol. Signal number 3 was declared over Sorsogon, Burias Island, Quezon, Polillo Island and Marinduque. Storm signal number 2 was hoisted over Metro Manila, Bataan, Aurora, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Masbate and northern Samar.

The government ordered the suspension of school classes today in all levels in Metro Manila and the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon.

This storm continues to threaten coconut plantations in the southern regions of Luzon. Desiccated coconut prices are expected to rise as coconut and copra prices elevate.
